바티칸 박물관을 돌다 어느새 길이 시스티나 성당으로 이어졌다.
The way around the Vatican museum led to Cappella Sistina.

계단을 오르면 오른쪽으로 문이 있고 문을 통과하면 천장화가 좌중을 압도한다. 거대한 성당 내부는 어두웠고, 공기는 차갑게 가라앉아 있었다. 바닥에는 가만히 서서 천장을 올려다보는 사람들로 가득했다.

Walking up the stairs, I saw a door to my right. As I went through the door there was a ceiling painting that awed the crowd. The spacious insides of the Cappella Sistina were dark, and I felt the cold air. There were people looking at the ceiling painting on the ground, standing still.

뒤를 돌면 최후의 심판이 벽면에 그려져 있다. 가이드는 다섯 발자국만 내딛은 다음에 뒤를 돌아 뱀에게 성기가 물린 한 남자를 확인해보라 했다. 나도 모르게 다섯 발자국을 세며 걸었고, 뒤를 돌았다. 그러나 그 남자를 확인하기에 앞서 거대한 벽화에 압도당해 오른쪽 귀퉁이를 보려던 시선이 멈춰버렸다.

Turning back, there is theN'Last Judgement' drawn on the wall. The guide told us to take five steps ahead and look back to see the man who got bit on his genitals by a snake. I counted the five steps and looked back. But before recognizing the man who got bit, my eyes rested on the huge mural, and I forgot to see the right corner.

시스티나 성당에서는 사진을 찍지 못하게 했다. 사진을 찍을 경우 카메라를 압수하고, 돌려주더라도 메모리는 포맷이 원칙이라 했다. 그렇게 이야기하면 어떻게든 사진을 찍을 수 있는 방법을 강구하고 만다.

It is forbidden to take pictures in Cappella Sistina. If you do, your cameras will be taken, and even if they give you back the cameras, you will have to format the memory card. Even if that's the case, people find a way to take pictures.

과감하게 사진을 찍는 외국 사람도 몇몇 보였다. 어떤 사람은 플래시까지 터뜨렸다. 그때마다 꾸짖듯 엄한 목소리로 방송이 나왔다. 노 포토, 사일런스, 쉬.

Some foreigners boldly took pictures. Some even used flash. And every time they did it, there would be an announcement. No photos, Silence, Shhh..

겸손함은 교황이 설교하는 중요한 미덕일지 모른다. 하지만 이곳 바티칸 미술관에는 그러한 미덕을 찾아볼 수 없다. 그중 가장 눈부신 것은 시스티나 성당이다. 보티첼리, 기를란다요, 핀투리키오의 작품이 벽면을 장식한다. 미켈란젤로의 천장을 장식한 프레스코 벽화는 대작 중 대작이다. 겁에 질린 죄인과 눈부시게 아름다운 예언자들은 마치 벽에서 튀어나올 것만 같다. - [디스커버리 이탈리아, 론리플래닛]
Modesty might be the most important virtue that the pope preaches. But here in the Vatican Art Museum, we couldn't find such virtue. The most remarkable of them all is Cappella Sistina. The artworks of Botticelli, Ghirlandajo, and Pinturicchio decorate the wall. The fresco by Michelangelo is the greatest masterpiece ever.
